Are You An ADD Entrepreneur?

by Jen on October 2, 2008

As a crazy busy entrepreneur, you may have some of the following characteristics.  Do you:

  • Generate a lot of great ideas, but successfully implement very few?
  • Delegate comfortably, but often oversimplify the task?
  • Feel full of energy, but find that you sap your team’s energy?
  • Have a sense of urgency about the latest project, but forget about the 10 other projects you began yesterday?

Coincidentally, these characteristics are very similar to people who have been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder.  Some experts have estimated that as many as half of all entrepreneurs have ADD.

Many of my clients share in these characteristics, and I must admit that I do, too.  I guess that’s why I get along so well with ADD entrepreneurs!

While ADD is often perceived as a limitation, there are great strengths in it.

Here’s a list of ADD strengths from ADD Coach Pete Quily.  Actually, this is only an excerpt…his total list is over 150 items long!

Ambitious – you want to be everything when “you grow up”
Artistic
Comfortable talking in front of groups
Comfortable with change and chaos
Compassion for others and for themselves
Creates connections easily
Creative
Entrepreneurial
Goal-oriented
High energy – go, go, go
Idea generator
Impulsive (in a good way) not afraid to act
Not contained by boundaries
Persistent
Quick thinking
Resourceful
Tenacious
Thinks big, dreams big
Willing to take risks
Works well under pressure

So, instead of getting frustrated with yourself for any limitations you might have as an ADD entrepreneur, consider all the positives that you bring to the world!
